Lego bricks, as toys, brim with endless creative possibilities and symbolize joyful moments of piecing together and building the objects of our dreams. However, artist You Meng-Shu seeks to deconstruct our preconceived notions of Lego as positive through the interplay of different media. The round holes and flat surfaces on the tops of Lego bricks provide structural stability, but in this work, You Meng-Shu instead focuses on the “negative spaces” on the bottom. She recasts the backs of Lego bricks into unique ceramic surfaces, challenging preconceived notions about Lego. The work’s title, embodying the idea of “facing the wall and reflecting on one’s mistakes,” perfectly captures the artist’s perspective: she feels that the postures of people facing the wall are like the Lego bricks in the work, with their hidden sides facing the viewer. You Meng-Shu uses the transformation of media to move beyond the agenda of contemporary art and attempts to return perspective to the realm of pure aesthetics.
