Lego bricks contain the potential for all kinds of construction. With the studs and anti-studs in the bricks, countless forms of fantasy can be assembled. Their vibrant colors create a positive and inspiring experience. Artist You Meng-Shu transforms standardized Lego bricks into ceramic works through a process called “remolding.” While each piece retains the Lego block structure, the logic of repetitive construction and assembly is completely broken down once the ceramic is fired and set. You Meng-Shu employs a “smoke firing” technique that imbues the ceramic surface with varying depths of texture and color. Unlike the uniformity of Lego mechanical production, each piece is unique due to the randomness of firing. From a distance, the neatly arranged ceramic bricks resemble a low-resolution pixelated image, while the varying heights of the Lego bricks and the gradient color created by the firing process give the space a more three-dimensional sense of height and depth.
