Artist Wei-Chen Chen’s “Geometric Encoding” series uses ceramic tiles, a popular building material in Taiwan in the 1960s, as its primary medium. Composed in two forms, two-dimensional and three-dimensional sculptures, the series reinterprets the appearance of architectural decoration in the era of machine-made mass production. In this three-dimensional sculpture, Wei-Chen Chen first creates a curved base with a wooden structure in order to break the rigidity of the tiles. He then layers the tiles and plastic corrugated board, creating a soft, dynamic feel. At first glance, the work appears to be the product of computer graphics, creating an intriguing illusion of viewing a digital work. However, upon closer inspection, the viewer can still discern the traces of the tiles’ affixation, from the texture and reflectiveness of the tiles’ glaze to the holes and rough edges of the caulk. Wei-Chen Chen’s meticulous handcrafting responds to the sensory experiences of the digital age, reminding viewers of the delicate line between virtual and real.
