In this work, artist Wei-Chen Chen adds a layer of corrugated plastic sheet over ceramic tiles. The edges of the sheet are spray-painted to form closed loops, reminiscent of the "inner halo" effect found in image editing software. Tiny blue crosshairs are added between the gray gaps in the tiles, symbolizing both the digital anchor points used in computer software for positioning and the physical tile spacers used when laying tiles. Wei-Chen Chen feels that neatly arranging tiles is like copying and pasting in large quantities, except that tiles are made by firing clay, while digital images only require copying and pasting on a keyboard. By overlapping and contrasting two fundamentally different elements, “material” and “digital,” she confuses the perception of reality and virtuality, responding to our visual inertia of being in physical space but gradually being influenced by digitalization.
