Artist Hu Jyun-Jie is dedicated to depicting the “essence” of things. While his works focus on landscapes, they do not depict them in three dimensions. Instead, they draw on Eastern shanshui concepts to explore inner spirituality. His work Latent Flow was inspired by an experience decorating a home space. The naturally draping and spreading forms of beard lichens (Usnea) around his new home prompted him to reflect on the relationship between space and fluidity. This work presents two distinct mountain structures: the massive, solid mountain was created using the common welding method, creating a thick mass; the mountain made from thin bars was created using a more precise technique, argon welding, to fuse thin iron bars bit by bit to create a flowing mountain shape. Both require careful temperature control and subtle adjustments to the direction. For Hu Jyun-Jie, creation is a constant tug-of-war, dialogue, and interaction between the artist and the material, finding a state of coexistence and balance.
