Artist Hu Jyun-Jie primarily uses iron and stainless steel as his media, so he has mastered the art of welding, melting and joining the steel bit by bit. For him, welding is more than just a method of joining metals; it is a “spiritual shaping process.” His work In the Mountain draws inspiration from the Eastern aesthetic concept of “a world in a grain of sand,” and combines plant and mountain imagery. Hu Jyun-Jie takes a sculptural approach to “landscape,” and brings out the spiritual realm pursued by bonsai or garden landscapes. The square frame at the bottom of the work symbolizes the boundaries between inside and outside, up and down, front and back of space. The mountain scenery is suspended above the square frame, creating a sense of imbalance that transcends reality. The viewer’s gaze not only shuttles through the frame, but also extends from within a certain boundary to an unknown distance. The artist attempts to use this interweaving of reality and illusion to draw out the viewer’s projection and imagination of their own “inner mountain.”
