The eagle within the glass dome, once wound and powered, is able to fly freely. The work is like a small theater, where the performance begins and ends within the time the spring continues to run. Artist Chiu Chao-Tsai’s “Clockwork Pattern” series is based on the concept of dynamic specimen collection. He has been developing interactive mechanical devices, and in recent years has focused on the power storage mechanism of clockwork. This series features a variety of themes, displayed within the glass dome like insect specimens. This work, Fly, features an eagle with outstretched wings. A wound-up spring drives the object within the glass dome, its speed gradually slowing from a peak until the spring unwinds and stops. This is the process of “Clockwork Pattern.” Simply winding the spring again repeats the process, forming a cycle of time, movement, and exchange.
