Artist Lin Yi-Hsuan excels at translating everyday observations into abstract symbols, crystallizing them in his creations. While wandering through an old neighborhood, Lin Yi-Hsuan was captivated by the play of light and shadow in the narrow alleyways, so he translated these feelings into a palette of gray and black in the diptych Beyond Thought II IV. Large geometric color blocks connect and layer over one another, seemingly stable, but actually full of dynamism. Upon closer inspection, each block is covered with fine particles, as in a gelatin silver print, but this work was done with the printmaking of aluminum foil lithography, which not only expresses the delicate textures of brushstrokes, hand-drawn lines, and rubbings, but also significantly reduces platemaking time, allowing the artist to improvise. The seemingly static imagery conveys the flow of time and invites viewers to experience a fleeting yet enduring moment.
