Sometimes it’s a shadow on a wall, sometimes it’s a speck of dust drifting quietly through the air. These often overlooked, small moments in daily life can draw artist Lin Yi-Hsuan’s long-term attention. The symbols in his work Serenity I resemble time-worn pebbles and their reflections on water, striking a balance between stillness and flow. Within the minimalist palette lies a rich tapestry of layers. Lin Yi-Hsuan imitates the multiple exposure technique of analog photography to condense the continuous movement of ripples on the water’s surface into a single image, like a timeline. Not only do they convey the notion of time, they also guide the viewer’s gaze slowly through the print. Upon closer inspection, the vivid, tiny dots of ink amid the grayscale become the rays of light and specks of dust in our daily gaze, and a depiction of our inner state of mind. A world in a single flower, and an eternity in a single moment—these are the core concepts Lin Yi-Hsuan seeks to convey through his work.
