Artist Lee Jr-Yun often draws inspiration from historical sources, creating her work through the reorganization and rendering of images. The work Operas was inspired from her memories of a residency in the United States. At the time, she lived in a converted old newspaper factory, where the ceiling was full with the densely packed water pipes that often produced loud noises late at night. The artist selected old photographs of water pipes and department stores from a local photo archive, extracting the images and assembling them. After printing them using photopolymer technology, the artist hand-colored them. The composition is framed from an upward perspective, with three black water pipes extending outward from a central black oval, alluding to a sense of unease and fear. She also transformed the department store’s ornate architectural form into a backdrop. Through this process of assembling disparate elements, Lee Jr-Yun not only wove personal memories with the once-thriving city’s past, but also explores the interpretive relationship between humans and historical objects.
