Artist Lee Jr-Yun frequently collects historical materials from museums and art galleries to use as inspiration for her work. The state of Ohio, which once prospered from its heavy industries like steelmaking, still retains many factory ruins. She created her work Mapping during a residency there. Lee selected a photograph of an old mattress taken at a construction site from a local photo archive as her subject. After splicing it with images from other photographs, she used a photosensitive resin plate to create a base map. The fluorescent green and blue colors in the work were hand-painted. The artist transformed the embossed texture of the mattress into a map, using stars and lines to mark her movements during her residency, much like using Google Maps. Combining historical images with her own experience of physical movement, Lee Jr-Yun forged a unique perception of the past and present of this industrial city.
