While studying fine arts, artist Wu Song-Ming experimented with wood sculpture, but soon realized he had a soft spot for painting. He then transformed his experience in wood sculpture into woodblock printmaking. The delicate woodcuts and lines in his paintings are a testament to his mastery of the knife. In 2023, Wu Song-Ming was invited to create work for the Chishang Autumn Rice Harvest Arts Festival, where he sketched during the sweltering harvest season. The Takeshi Kaneshiro tree, made famous by advertisements, stands in the center of a field, with a few rocks at its base offering a place for rest. Clouds adorn the horizon, rice paddies extend into the distance, and the mountains on either side cut a horizon line that occupies only the middle third of the frame, highlighting the tree’s great height. Wu Song-Ming’s unique knife technique vividly captures the dense branches and foliage of the old bishopwood tree, the overlapping shadows of the leaves, and the brightness of the branches’ illuminated sides.
