Mapmaking today looks very different from how it was done in the past. Artist Chou Tai-Chun examined the old maps such as the Kangxi-era Map of Taiwan and realized that they reflect very different perspectives on viewing the land. He also observed that although we now rapidly access information through digital technology, this also creates a distance from the land. Red and blue lines meander through the red and green-pigmented landscape, while scattered throughout are images of houses symbolizing settlements, resembling an ancient map. The blocks representing land are rendered by using an automated technique, creating a sense of fluidity. The countless frame lines and large expanses of blue in the foreground represent his use of painting to mimic the layering function within computer software. Chou Tai-Chun’s work juxtaposes image elements from different time periods, demonstrating how people today try to understand history through contemporary thinking. This serves as a reminder to viewers in the digital age to physically visit the land and experience local customs with all five senses.
