Artist Liao Min-Chun uses carbon fiber yarn to weave hazy memories. She combines an image of her niece, who resembles the way she looked in childhood, with those of cartoon characters she admired as a child, to create the four-part work you see here. She wove together layers of 0.22mm carbon fiber yarn, with warp, weft, and diagonal threads in varying directions, which creates a flickering effect depending on the viewing angle. The interwoven diagonal threads also create a handwriting-like quality, reminiscent of a sketch. Using a marker, she then applies color through the tip of a pen, leaving blank spaces and preserving the dripping or condensed strokes of the pigment itself. With carbon fiber thread, Liao Min-Chun weaves together her childhood memories and inner longings, to capture the nebulous connections of fragmented memories, loss, and longing in her artworks.
