This work, Drunken Tango, draws inspiration from an early Taiwanese film of the same name. It depicts a confused, unmarried, pregnant teenager’s struggle to choose between the biological father of her child and a stable, wealthy middle-aged man. The work, with its minimalist setting, absurd plot, and entirely Taiwanese soundtrack, exudes a distinctly Taiwanese style, and it deeply captivated artist Ni Jui-Hung. Imagining herself as the film’s publicity designer, she reinterpreted the poster. The female protagonist sits mournfully at the foot of the bed, her ex-boyfriend lounges lazily at the headboard, and a suited man opens the door and enters their shared space, showcasing the relationship between the characters. Ni Jui-Hung incorporates furniture from her former rental apartment in Kaohsiung, such as trash cans and shell lamps, into her work, as if she were present. Using watercolor and pencil, Ni Jui-Hung creates artworks reminiscent of early textbook illustrations, complementing them with long-form writing to forge a unique Taiwanese style.
