Artist Chung Chung-Yu often delves into the concept of boundaries between “work and non-work,” “finished and unfinished” in his work. Cement board, which can be created to resemble Béton brut, has recently become a popular interior decoration material. However, this finished product may be seen as “unfinished” by older generations. Chung Chung-Yu creates directly on the concrete board using cement and mortar, with the lightest areas being the board itself. The entire work employs perspective to create a clear three-dimensional structure, presenting a simple yet concrete architectural space. By transforming architectural materials into a creative medium, the artist blurs the lines between space and artwork. Furthermore, within this precise rational framework, the grayscale changes caused by temperature or humidity during the cement drying process are variables that the artist has deliberately retained, adding a poetic and sensual blank space to this creation.
