Chung Chung-Yu, who possesses both the identity of an artist and an arts administrator, continues to explore the thought-provoking and ambiguous boundaries between “work and non-work,” and “finished and unfinished” in his creations. Chung used the same ink lines used during construction to lay out the wooden planks that can be seen throughout the exhibition space. He then applied greyscale colors using cement and mortar, and applied wood wax oil directly onto the boards to create shadows, thus implementing his creative approach of “painting with building materials.” The cement slab leaning against the wall recreates the actual scene of the works being casually placed before the exhibition. The perspective lines left by the ink lines in the foreground of the painting also make people wonder whether this work is unfinished. By breaking with conventional practices, the artist not only allows viewers to rethink possible approaches to exhibition viewing, but also incorporates the perceptions and techniques that originally belong to the “exhibition site” into the created work.
