In the age of social media, our gaze might pause on a party cake on the screen one moment, then be confronted with a horrifying war scene the next. Our brains are constantly switching between complex emotions like joy and fear, and this has become our daily life. Artist Huang Hai-Hsin juxtaposes two contrasting worlds in this panoramic composition. There are beautiful scenes of a luxurious yacht cruising, couples chatting at outdoor cafes, and swimmers relaxing on beach chairs. Contrasting with these scenes are images of slowly approaching armed soldiers and fighter jets flying across a blood-red sky, hinting at a crisis. Tanks and nuclear power plants in the distance unsettle the seemingly joyful scene, threatening violence and conflict. Huang Hai-Hsin’s work accurately exposes the unspeakable absurdity of the online world, revealing how people lull themselves into a false sense of a “little happiness.”
