Artist Wu Yi-Tze, who has long focused on Taiwanese landscapes, believes that everything changes over time. When he paints landscapes from photographs, his subconscious returns to the moment he first clicked the shutter, hence his “Back to the Beginning” series. One of the works in the series, Flow, depicts a common scene at a Taiwanese interchange. A betel nut stall stands distinct against a blurred background, its metal container and sign creating contrasting light and dark colors. Upon closer inspection, a human figure appears to be inside the stall. Wu Yi-Tze, whose previous works often focus on uninhabited landscapes, uses blocks of color to create human figures in this work, allowing the subject to naturally become part of the landscape. The vague silhouette and blurred background evoke a hazy quality reminiscent of memory. The artist skillfully balances the lines between ambiguity and clarity, revealing her meticulous observation of Taiwan’s local landscape.
