The work before you is part of one of the series, “Ocean Theater” from artist Yang Shun-Fa’s “Island Project.” He visited Taiwan’s coastlines, continuously investigating and photographing, and he developed works with various themes to present Taiwan’s rich and exciting maritime culture. This work, Ocean Theater No. 12, is based on the eel fry fishing operations at the mouth of Lanyang River in Yilan. Every winter, eel fishermen must fish for fry in cold weather and against wind and waves, which is both hard and dangerous. Yang Shun-Fa took hundreds of photos of eel-catchers working at different times at fixed locations and perspectives, and finally merged them into one photo to allow time to flow in the picture. Wearing cold-proof and waterproof overalls, the eel catchers drag their hand-drawn nets into the vast sea, showing their fighting attitude against the sea and their maritime risk-taking spirit.
