作品賞析
Artist Fan Jiung-Lieh’s recent creations engage in dialogue with natural objects such as floating clouds, mountains and forests, responding to his own inner life, they explore issues such as virtuality and reality, surface appearance and interiority. He uses sculptural, representational landscape to convey the invisible inner landscape. His work Eastern comes from his creative experiences. He often goes to Hualien, a city at the foot of mountains, in order to buy basalt, and he feels a particularly strong affinity for these majestic mountains in eastern Taiwan. For the base, Fan used a piece of naturally cracked basalt that he felt was full of vitality, and he carved it into a tree winding its way up the mountain. He then colored it with clay to give the surface a rustic texture resembling both moss and bronze. After it winds to the top of the towering mountain, the tree spreads out its branches and leaves so they resemble a floating, seemingly windblown cloud. Its shape is graceful and unrestrained, as if it has been tempered and has a broader sense of the world.
