The work Life Saving comes from the artist Tsui Yung-Yen’s “Shallow Beach” series. The white doll-like figure nervously grasps the swimming ring on his or her body; his or her movements and the shallow water under his or her feet create a sense of conflict. Most of Tsui’s works use simple colors, offering a clean and straightforward appearance to the viewer. However, to balance the heavy theme, an atmosphere of floating and instability is created. Therefore, she painted the doll-like figure pearl white, and without affecting the overall tone of the work, she used red—a rare color for her—to decorate the swimming ring around the figure’s waist, strengthening the symbolic meaning of the lifebuoy, and she textured the golden pedestal at the bottom to create an image of water from above. In her creations, Tsui tries to transform the inner confusion and fear people experience when facing important choices, and condenses that uncertain psychological state into her works.
