Artist Chiu Chieh-Sen is concerned with the complex relationship between people and geography. He believes that maps are subject to interpretation, rather than purely objective depictions. He summarizes and analyzes the maps he collects during his travels, then disassembles, reduces, or cuts them up, extracts their symbols, and so on, thereby expanding the expressiveness of the map surface and transforming his spatial experience and thoughts into artistic creations. In his work E.U., he uses line images and sparse or dense arrangements to outline spatial images of Europe’s low-lying areas, or densely populated Netherlands, France or Germany. Chiu Chieh-Sen flattens the finished map through “deconstruction,” causing it to lose its original meaning. He then combines his imagination with real-world geographical locations to construct a new map. Through a subtle creative labor process, he transforms map symbols into a perceptual form of language, creating multi-level connections and imaginative reading spaces in a new map.
