Artist Chiu Chieh-Sen regards maps as depicting what the human eye sees and what is in the world. The material used to make maps have evolved from stone tablets and parchment to today’s paper, and with the accumulation of history and culture, maps have special historical significance. Therefore, Chiu works specifically with map drawings and reinterprets them from a personal perspective. For his work U.K., he disassembled a published atlas of Britain and flattened it to render the information on it invalid, liberating it into pure visual elements, and then he reassembled them. The composition is filled with dense green and red lines, suggesting a densely populated metropolis, while the sparsely populated islands of the United Kingdom are presented in a hollowed-out manner. Through the process of deconstruction and construction, Chiu stacks the new maps like abstract paintings in an attempt to explore new ways of making and reading maps.
