Prelude #2 is a representation of artist Liu Yu-Fang’s life. The two black masses occupying much of the picture are obstacles she has encountered, and the tangled black lines are troubles that cannot be sorted out. However, there are reeds and white flowers in the foreground, and the black mass is covered with green lines like grass, full of vitality. Liu uses clear water-based paints and thick oil paints suitable for layering to create the multiple layers on the canvas. In the background, Liu Yu-Fang used three mineral pigments, red, green, and blue, for a wash effect, creating a light, graceful charm rarely seen in woodcut prints. The artist has transformed herself into a small tree that appears in the work. The trunk of the orange tree is slender, and the leaves are shaped like clouds, as if they are about to float beyond the boundaries of the composition. What the “Prelude” series aims to convey is that no matter what difficulties we may encounter, we can, like the mythical Pangu, transform external chaos and create a whole new world, achieving inner tranquility.
