In the eyes of artist Huang Chun-Yuan, “nine fish pictures,”, “peonies on Hakka fabric,” and “ Aun- A- Piao (milk caps), a traditional game in Taiwan” were elements rich in local style that could be seen everywhere in Taiwan in the 1980s and represented the “popular” and “trendy” much like Taiwan’s own vision of “Pop Art.” These things served as inspiration when he created this series of works. The bodies of the nine fishes have peony patterns, and the faded tones of the Aun- A- Piao (milk caps) fill the work with a Taiwanese flavor. While creating these images, Huang Chun-Yuan accidentally discovered that dividing the fish into groups of two, three, or four would result in the most visually harmonious image, and these groups can also function as metaphors for the balance between closeness and distance among people. Silk screen printing requires one color layer after another, one color per plate. However, Huang Chun-Yuan’s works are rich in color requiring as many as 20 to 30 plates and precise printing techniques, with each additional plate making the process more cumbersome. Through this series of works, he also hopes to arouse viewers’ interest and call upon them to value traditional handcraft printmaking techniques.
