Artist Huang Chun-Yuan was inspired by the “nine fish pictures” that one would commonly see in Taiwanese households in the 1980s, so he created this series of works rich in Taiwanese local cultural elements, but with a strong Pop Art style. He combined the image of fish with the peonies of Hakka fabrics, and the colors were inspired by the faded tones of his favorite Aun- A- Piao (milk cap) designs, a traditional game from his childhood. The selection of these elements fills the picture with a Taiwanese flavor, and is also in line with the “popular” and “trendy” characteristics of Pop Art. Huang Chun-Yuan uses silk screen printing to create his works. This technique requires that the different colors are printed layer-by-layer. The process, which involves printing 20 to 30 layers of colors, is cumbersome but results in works rich with color, becoming one of the defining features of his creative signature. Through this series, Huang Chun-Yuan hopes to arouse viewers’ interest and attention to traditional handicraft printmaking techniques.
