作品賞析
Artist Chou Yo-Chen’s work Whale Habitat tells a beautiful yet sad story. When a whale dies, its huge body needs to go through a decomposition process that can last for months or even years. Its remains will gradually become nutrients for various marine organisms. The place where this process takes place has a poetic name: “whale fall.” Chou Yo-Chen is good at creating works with plaster prints. In the center of the picture, there is a whale with its flippers spread out. This is the body of a whale that fell to the bottom of the sea and eventually became a habitat for all kinds of things in the otherwise barren deep sea. Chou uses overlapping colors to shape colorful coral and seaweed; small fish and plankton appear and disappear among them. We are looking at the world of the whale fall from above. Infinitely repeated patterns and shapes form an endless cycle, and the flat picture continues to expand and extend infinitely beyond the line of sight.
