Artist Zhang Hui-Ling often finds herself feeling unused to unfamiliar places, so she depicts the relationship between individuals and familiar places in her series of works “It Seems Familiar and Understood, But It Also Seems Not to Be Like This.” Zhang Hui-Ling breaks away from traditional methods of Eastern gouache color composition, expressing gradient changes of light and shadow with color blocks. The places she depicts are not purely representational；They also reflect her understanding of the places, as well as the contradictory feelings that arise upon discovering she has not understood them as well as she had imagined. The picture depicts her kitchen at home, which is filled with stainless steel kitchen utensils, the place where she spends most of her time. In her mind’s eye, the color of stainless steel pots and bowls is green rather than gray. Therefore, she used green as the main color, and blue to express changes of light and shadow on the surface of the vessels, while the warm colors of yellow and brown bring a touch of warmth to the cold atmosphere.
