Do the images of broken leaves and low bushes standing in the shape of a cross remind you of the “broken graphics” or “broken images” scenes that occasionally appear in video games when some of the images are incomplete? For the artist Huang Yu-Hao, playing video games is one of his leisure activities. He discovered that plants feature in some of the most frequently appearing broken 3D images in games. Whenever he sees this situation, he will “wake up” from his immersion in the virtual world and realize that he is playing a game. As a result, he started to think about the relationships among people, 3D objects, and the virtual world. Huang Yu-Hao used the common Taiwanese stiff-leaved Meliosma tree as a vehicle for developing his “Meliosma” series of works. The lifelike images evoke the viewer’s feelings when they are playing games, and convey the meaning that “no matter how real the plants in front of them are, they are not the real ones after all, but just images that look the same.”
