In artist Hsieh Fu Yuan’s “Transparent World” series, humans and animals appear in primitive states, in contrast with the surrounding man-made scenery. But “transparent” here does not mean invisible, but is rather closer to “looking without seeing.” Hsieh Fu Yuan often compares his works to visual diaries, and the inspiration for his work, Don’t Look at Me This Way, comes from his own childhood experience of being overly cared for by his family. It also expresses the idea that in the age of information explosion, people can be doxxed at any time, that is, they are “seen through.” “Small scene” painting is a poetic landscape painting style, often focusing on islets and waterfowl and using level distance. Hsieh Fu Yuan depicted a yellow-green pond based on the structural techniques of this painting style, allowing viewers to focus on the main figure—this creates a sense of contradiction with the title of the work. Finally, he hopes to appeal to viewers to be brave enough to just “be themselves” in an era when everyone’s life is under scrutiny, and to live and create without being affected by outside judgment.
