Artist Tsai Wan-Ning feels that the traces left on soft fabrics after use reflect the invisible pressure created by people interaction with the environment. The quilts, mattresses, and other daily necessities, with which she has the closest contact, have gradually become central subjects of her artwork, serving as projections of her own feelings. In Multi-layered Bed with Cracks, Tsai draws inspirations from the multi-layered mattress in the fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea.” The overlapping layers of mattresses and quilts are warped and form twisted gaps under the weight pressure, symbolizing an anxious mood that mirrors the struggles of life. Using paper imprint techniques, Tsai creates her pieces by rubbing and removing paper fibers, a process that evokes the metabolism of human skin. The rough, damaged texture of the fibers in her work strengthens the visual representation of the body. Through soft tones, the artist explores the duality of women’s strength and fragility, highlighting the pressures imposed by society.
