Interactive use of a variety of media, along with an emphasis on the “handmade,” gives artist Chen Yu-Yu’s creations a richly layered and delicate textural expression. Chen is deeply attracted by the sight of plants growing out of ruins. Inspired by her reflections on life and death during the pandemic, she developed a series of paintings that can evoke both day and night styles simultaneously. Reverie portrays a mottled washbasin. While it appears to be a flat work, the deep part of the sink is actually sculpted into the wooden base. Chen Yu-Yu used natural holey sponges to imprint colors onto the surface, layering mineral pigments and other media to evoke the textures of cement, old tiles, stagnant water, and water spiders. To enhance the effect, she applies luminous powder to the areas where water accumulates and where the water spiders are depicted, allowing the work to shimmer brightly in the dark. As light and shadow move across it, the piece reveals its vitality.
