Inside and Outside the Window

Artist Cany Chang’s work Inside and Outside the Window depicts the straight trees on Alishan. The circular composition is inspired by the moon window views in Japanese or Chinese garden architecture, and also symbolizes a complete and harmonious view of the universe. Cany Chang first kneaded and twisted the paper, then used a homemade roller, rubber scraper, and other tools to brush it in a single stroke, allowing the ink color to naturally change in shading and blend in with the wrinkles of the paper to form a uniquely textured background. On part of the left side, she pasted rice paper, taking advantage of its translucent, thin quality to allow the image underneath show faintly through, thereby creating a mountain forest scene that looks as if shrouded in a light fog. She used a carpentry tool, the “ carpenter's sink marker,” to shoot ink into the white area on the right side of the painting, creating crisp black lines and dots. In the artist’s thinking, a tree steadily growing straight up has a positive connotation, and she hopes to convey the practice of environmental protection and the ideal of coexistence between man and nature in her work.
