Cany Chang’s ink paintings explore the changes and cycles of natural things, ponder our relationship with nature, and find hidden truths by listening to what her heart tells her. They record her memories a stroke at a time. Her work, Extracting the Sound of the Dropping of Time, reflects the Chan Buddhist artistic tradition in ink painting as well as the aesthetics of Western modernism. Concrete images are dissociated in the attempt to see the essence of objects, and an abstract, monochromatic visual vocabulary is presented. Multiple levels of black, gray, and white heighten the contrasts. The straight lines and geometric proportions add to the variation in the space of the composition. The blank spaces are like the sound beyond the vibration of the strings on a stringed instrument, and whether preserved by the artist intentionally or not, they exist somewhere between the virtual and the real and show the richness and depth of the artist’s mental landscape.
