The work Somewhere Without, a composite media work by artist Wu Chia-Yun, was created using various methods such as photography, pencil drawing, and digital scanning. From a database of his own photography, he selected a photo taken as a snapshot while traveling in Scotland. In the image, a man and a woman taking pictures were standing on a hill, with a seemingly limitless expanse of sky in the background. After Wu Chia-Yun developed it, he scribbled on it with pencil, wiped it with an eraser, and digitally scanned them to convert the negatives into digital files. This way, he left the materiality of pencils and erasers in the digital image, and extended the original time of the photographic image. The creation of Somewhere Without was a process of exploration between digital and material, static and dynamic. The image shows chaotic feelings amid calm, capturing and creating a subtle state that is difficult to put into words.
