The artist Wei Wei De was raised by his grandmother. He was instilled with the concept of gods and Buddhas from an early age, but never understood the root of his grandmother’s beliefs. When he was a child, he believed that Batman was the real hero, compared to gods and Buddhas! He depicts this paradoxical episode in his work Garden-Belief. In the home shrine for -worshiping Buddha, his grandmother is placing coil incense into the incense stand. The table is full of fruit offerings, but above the center of it Wei Wei De puts a Batmobile model, while Batman clenches his hands as if he is about to fly out and save the world. There is a bit of childish innocence behind the humor. The kind of red plastic sheet commonly used as a table covering often appears in the “Garden Series” works, which represent his connection with childhood memories. A large area of red plastic cloth also appears behind Batman, symbolizing the manifestation of a miracle. In composing the picture, Wei Wei De used a somewhat higher, downward-looking perspective, which lets us subtly sense his feelings of distance from home.
