The space in the work Get in Line is dark and eerie. A mannequin stands behind the counter with one arm akimbo, and three animals ignoring the yellow queue marks on the ground scramble for position. What exactly is happening in this scene? Just as we are confused and trying to find clues in the picture, we find a wooden sign reading “Pharmacist in Practice” hanging on the cabinet at the back, and then we can figure out that the scene is actually a pharmacy. Artist Wei Wei De, who likes to collect small plastic animal models, including docile sheep and ferocious lions, is here depicting various aspects of life that he once observed in a pharmacy. The character tags on these animals only hint at the different temperaments of people. Meanwhile, the decorative leaves grow inward from outside of the frame, which not only adds a touch of wildness from the jungle, but also guides the viewer’s sight outside the frame, so that the viewer together with the artist can watch all of this happen.
