Artist Chen Hung-Hsin has solid skills in the techniques of realism. The small animals and plants in his paintings are very lifelike, and do not require exaggerated gestures or brilliant colors to catch the viewer’s attention and generate resonance. In this painting, a small, cute hedgehog is hidden in the midst of an expanse of green split leaf philodendron (Monstera deliciosa) under a dark starry sky; it looks at us through the gaps between leaves. Chen Hung-Hsin uses common, familiar plants, and hedgehogs, which are timid yet curious, as a metaphor for people who explore society with great caution. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that he sprinkled crushed gold leaf on the black background, giving the picture a soft luster. The effect is like shining a light into a dark space, so that tiny, suspended dust motes become faintly visible.
