Artist Chen Hung-Hsin’s creations are based on the current living conditions of himself and his friends. In his “Disguiser” series of works, the cute, timid little hedgehog represents the young generation who have just entered society, full of curiosity about the outside world, but who have also disguised themselves for self-protection. Everyone will hide their true selves and adapt to the environment when faced with different situations. In Chen’s work, The Disguiser #19—Green Sky, although the little hedgehog is behind a huge banana leaf, it seems like it wants to get out from that layer of protection. Chen Hung-Hsin feels that stories like Aesop’s fables often use cute, soft narratives to package a cruel reality. Inspired by this notion, he decided to package the ambivalence of young people’s expectations and fears of being hurt through soft, dreamy images that speak of the fragility and struggle of the human heart.
