My Dear Lovers Series: Balloon Girl

When people mask their facial features, we often become anxious because we may no longer be able to distinguish their gender, age, or concepts like good and evil, beauty and ugliness. Artist Tzeng Yi Hsin’s “My Dear Lovers” series conceals the faces of its subjects to show how we depend on the five senses. She uses the images of people with whom she was once close, but later parted ways; she transforms her emotions into the objects that she places over her subjects, blurring out their faces. The inspiration for the work “Balloon Girl” comes from a memory of going out with a friend and encountering a balloon vendor. Although balloons are colorful and lively, they either fly away as soon as you let go or deflate after a few days, so she thought how balloons are like fleeting lives, and how they suggested her friend’s personality traits. Thus, she covered her friend’s face with balloons, weaving a personal narrative of her own story.
