My Dear Lovers Series: Rolling Girl

When artist Tzeng Yi Hsin was studying in the United States, she realized that people’s faces are an important basis on which gender, race, beauty and ugliness are judged, and that much of the differentiation between ethnic groups originated from this. So she tried covering the faces of her subjects with different objects in order to explore issues of identity and memory. The “My Dear Lovers” series is an extension of her “Faceless” series. Tzeng Yi Hsin uses people who have briefly appeared in her life as the subjects for this series. She visualizes her impressions and feelings about these people as various things, which she depicts over their faces. Her work Rolling Girl depicts a human rights lawyer who is always formally dressed and serious-looking. The artist uses curled paper to allude to the softer side of the lawyer’s character. This series of works adopts the three-quarter profile bust form commonly seen in classical portraiture. The black-and -white tones evoke past memories, making the subjects naturally detached from reality and becoming objects of reminiscence.
