Artist Yang Hsiao-hsuan’s “Fading Scenery” series realistically depicts furniture and objects in daily life while presenting the sense that they are fading away over the passage of time. She looked at photos when depicting the objects’ images. Fading Scenery II shows an octagonal section of the tile floor of Yang’s home. This image was produced through computer-processed paper gravure printing. The sparrows were separately produced (drawn, cut, and pasted), added to the other print, and then the final work was made by silk printing. The sparrows thus seem to float above the rest of the print. The single gray-scale color tone reflects “fading” or “falling temperature”—the gradual disappearance of familiar scenes and the sense of rootlessness, of wandering around in an era of change. The contrast between the image of a sparrow and a paper-cut image of it highlights the contrast between the present and the fading past—the theme of this series.
