Artist Yang Hsiao-hsuan’s “Fading Scenery” series realistically depicts furniture and other everyday objects, juxtaposing old and new things made in different eras in the same composition in order to show the effects of the passage of time on them. Yang looked at photos when depicting the objects’ images, and then used computer graphics and laser cutting machines to create the printing plates. In Fading Scenery, the seats, potted plants, and plastic boxes, and so on that appear in the work were separately produced images (drawn, then cut and pasted), which were then added to the computer print already made from the background. The image uses a single grayscale tone to highlight the changes in the texture of the paper itself, showing that the word “fading” is intended to express the gradual disappearance of familiar scenes. Some of the object seem to be disappearing or have become silhouettes. Images with clear contrasts can better highlight the theme.
