The artist Huang Yuan-Yu has been involved in photography for more than ten years, and in recent years his creations have focused on environmental issues. To him, both the garbage and the driftwood on the beach were once parts of gorgeous and majestic things, so he turned this cast-off waste on the beach into his subject-matter. Using photography and drawing software to give them a beautiful appearance again, and approaching them from a black humor perspective, the creative topic can have both depth and beauty. The artist, who loves flower art, took separate photographs of pieces of driftwood and garbage and removed their backgrounds. Appropriating the vase-and-flower paintings of Sanyu, he used the driftwood for stems and garbage for flowers, adjusted their relative sizes, then reorganized them into new “arrangements.” The composition of these digital images echo those of traditional ink paintings, with seals and inscriptions, but the inscriptions on the images are composed of withered lotus stems, set into a font similar to that used in oracle bone inscriptions, and the seals bear images of wilted flowers.
