Artist Peng Fei-Jung’s pottery work Pray was inspired by the long staircase built along a mountain on the campus of her alma mater, and the staircase was seemingly converted from a tunnel. The door at the end of the staircase was like a portal to another time and space. For her medium she used American sculptural clay, which has a grainier texture and mineral composition that makes the finished product after firing a warmer, natural iron-red color. It also has high viscosity and low shrinkage; when the artist fires it, she gradually raises the temperature in order to maintain the integrity of the work’s appearance. She feels that life is sometimes like climbing stairs, and the only way to reach the exit is to keep climbing. Although the destination is distant and the process is painful, you will eventually arrive if you keep a slow, relentless pace.
