Wu Shiou-Ming is a digital technology artist and sound designer whose creative media spans the fields of electronic music, video, and installation art. For this work, Wu used a news photo from the Hong Kong Anti-extradition Law protests in 2020, applied a program that broke apart the image and reduced its quality, making it blurry, then let the program recompute it to generate a new digital image. The basic colors in the program, such as red, yellow, blue, and green, form continuously winding lines that seem to spread infinitely against a black background. It is thus difficult to mentally reconnect the distorted picture with the original news image. Only in the circular structure in the upper left corner of the picture can one vaguely see the outline of an umbrella, which was the symbol of the democratic protests in Hong Kong’s “Umbrella Movement” and “Anti-Extradition Movement.” The artist has thus used digital technology to reinterpret such social movements and translate them into new visual and sensory experiences.
