“In this world full of information and noise, how can reality be reproduced?” This is an issue that artist Wu Siou-Ming has been paying close attention to for a long time. From the Tiananmen Incident to the Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Movement, as soon as the news media filmed these street political movements, the “truth” has entered a process of constant translation and distortion. In his “Cultivated Reality” series, Wu takes news images of the Anti-Extradition Movement, uses a program to break or reduce the images’ quality and make them blurry, and then lets the program redesign them again, so that they present weirdly “distorted” but gorgeous images. As the protesters were resisting the state apparatus, they could only connect with each other through small groups, and in this way, they were surviving much as bacteria do in the environment. They may seem small and insignificant, but together they can aggregate and ferment. Through the creation of digital art like this, Wu reflects on and satirizes the distance between human-controlled news information and reality.
