The artist Yeh Yi-Hsien converted two transformative mountaineering experiences into this work. Once when she was in the mountains, she suffered from altitude sickness and had to hurry. Her teammates flashed searchlights through the forest, which in her exhaustion appeared to be surreal and magical. The second experience occurred when she was in the mountains and couldn’t sleep well due to a foot injury. Half asleep and half awake, she sensed that a wild boar or sambar was approaching her tent. She tried to move but was unable to, as if she were wrapped in the collective consciousness of the forest. In the lower right corner of this painting, there is a small huddled figure. The white halo covering her body is like a searchlight at night. The trees of the forest, by contrast, are huge, which creates a strong contrast with the tiny figure, showing the insignificant power of human beings in the face of nature. Yeh Yi-hsien used earth-toned mineral pigments that can show the texture of the soil, and she used their crystal refractive properties in line with what she subtly perceived in the mountains and forests.
