Artist Chen Wei-Wen was influenced by the famous humanist geographer Yi-fu Tuan and believes that when human beings imbue a space with meaning in other forms, it will become a “place.” In Cool Down, the artist recorded her memories of unbearable summer heat, when she just wanted to go into a swimming pool to cool down. She loves swimming, but has various emotions about the “swimming pool.” It is not just a space, but a place that carries feelings that she had when she was a child. Using delicate brushstrokes with ink and mineral pigments, she depicted the swimming pool’s surroundings. The near-invisible shadows of trees, buildings, and window frames suggest that all of this is a remembered scene. Bright blue is used to represent the image of a swimming pool. The simple composition, softly elegant colors, and a slightly hazy atmosphere give viewers a sensation of coolness.
